Combermere Abbey, where Sisi stayed for two hunting trips, re-opens for public tours in April.   The Cheshire mansion was closed for an award-winning restoration programme.  The historic north wing of the abbey had been abandoned for more than 60 years and its unstable Tudor frame threatened the survival of the whole building.

The wing, in which Empress Elisabeth had her bedroom in 1881 and 1882, had already been knocked down many years ago.   But many of the rooms Sisi used, such as the splendid library, are just the same as when Empress Elisabeth stayed there.

Combermere Abbey says that from 3 April 2018 individual tours will be available on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, lasting up to an hour, until 5 July 2018  Pre-booked group tours are also available for between 20 and 30 people during April to October.

You can also stay in the north wing for bed and breakfast in rooms that Sisi’s hunting companions and staff used, or rent cottages in the stable block, where Empress Elisabeth kept her horses.
