Countess Marie Festetics de Tolna 1839-1923

Marie Festetics was Elisabeth’s Lady-In Waiting from 1870 for more than 20 years.  The Hungarian-born companion was close to her fellow countrymen politicians Ferenc Deak and Gyula Andrassy.

Marie kept a diary that gives an intimate picture of Sisi’s life.  It is also clear that she was a shrewd judge of character. Eventually she could not keep up with the empress’s vigorous walks and she retired.   Marie died in Budapest after the First World War.
