After Sisi dismissed Count and Countess Konigsegg-Bellegarde the last survivors of her household chosen by Archduchess Sophie, she appointed Franz Nopcsa as Controller of her household. From a family of Hungarian aristocrats in Transylvania, south-east of Brasov in Transylvania, the ever-loyal Nopcsa served as head of the household from 1868 to 1894. He retired to his estate at Sieben Dorfer where he died.
His nephew and godson also called Franz, who he helped to educate, became a leading scholar and palaeontologist.
